Definition of a Pod:  (n.) a small group of students clustered together to gain knowledge or understanding through instruction and study.

LOWER POD: Jacques Cousteau Community

Children entering St. James between three and four years old join the Minnows, Dolphins or Whales class.  Their mornings are full of creative play and expression through games, art, songs, dances, working with numbers, letters, colors and much more.  They learn how to get along with others and begin to explore our world...God's creation.

MIDDLE POD: John James Audubon Community

As a Sparrow, Owl or Blue Jay, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders continue on their learning odyssey by building on the life skills taught earlier.  The focus of academic development for these years is mastery of the fundamentals - reading, math, geography and science - with a whole language approach to writing skills and creative expression.

UPPER POD: Mary McLeod Bethune Community

3rd, 4th and 5th graders (Disciples, Peacemakers and Pioneers) are encouraged in learning the same basic subjects, but in the upper pod, they both broaden and deepen their intellectual pursuits in a program which also encourages independent thinking and responsibility for oneself.  Instructors provide many opportunities for individual and team problem solving.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: Maya Angelou Community

By middle school years, 6th, 7th and 8th graders (Poets, Journalists, Playwrights and Authors) are prepared to interact with subject matter in an intellectual partnership with teachers.  They are encouraged to develop higher level thinking skills and do a variety of long term assignments outside the classroom.  Through involvement in service projects, they begin to recognize their place in the larger community and to understand what it means to be a Christian in today's society.
